The Estates

Unlike the Sites section, here we will focus on individual properties, most often characterized by a single, or at least main, vineyard core, which thus configures them as true estates. Famous or less famous, it matters little. Certainly these are unique estates in terms of history and landscape, and sometimes even fundamental in the history of Italian wine and/or the appellation to which they belong.

For some of them, the analysis will cover the entire estate, while other times it will cover only the most historic or significant part, without obviously implying any greater value than other vineyards on the estate that are not subject to specific in-depth study.

Unlike Barolo, where the individual sheets are written according to a specific criteria, in this case the individual headings you will find in the various sheets have been used with a certain elasticity and therefore need some important clarifications.

  • Wines. Only the main wines produced by the winery are listed under this heading, which may be red or white depending on the type in which the winery specializes. Nevertheless, you may come across some exceptions related to wines that are particularly significant or otherwise mentioned in the winery's descriptive text, images and maps.
  • UGAs. In the case where the appellation in which the estate falls envisages subdivision into UGAs (Unità Geografiche Aggiuntive), the approximate area planted with vines that the estate itself holds within the different UGAs will be indicated here, even if the name of the UGA is not then used on the label of one or more wines.
  • Vigna and/or Poderi. This is the entry that requires the most flexibility in reading. In the case of appellations where  an official list of Vigna mentions exists, under this heading you will find only the Vignas that the winery has entered on that list, accompanied by the approximate surface area. In the case where this list does not exist, only those vineyards that in our opinion are to be considered historical or otherwise most significant are listed, again accompanied by the approximate surface area. Finally, in still other cases, the main groups of vineyards (or Poderi, in Italian) into which the estate can be divided may be given.
  • Vineyards location. It is a map that makes it easy to locate the estate and its vineyards within the appellation, UGA or more generally the territory in which it falls. A red dot will indicate the location of the vineyards around the winery headquarters, while other vineyards will be indicated with a blue dot.
  • Detail maps. Unlike Barolo farms, here you will find various types of maps, which may be geoviticultural©, physical or simple plans with the names of the main vineyards, the grape varieties grown or even the wine for which some specific vineyards are intended.
